This Doctor of the Church’s profound writings on the interior life were born from decades of struggle with prayer as well as lifelong physical suffering. Behind the Inspiration
Teresa of Avila experienced great physical suffering throughout her life, including being so ill when she was young that when she came out of a days-long coma, a grave had already been dug for her. She credits her recovery from the coma to the intercession of St. Joseph, for whom she later named her first convent.
